What style of singing do you teach?
I teach a vocal technique that can be applied to all genres of music from pop to rock to jazz. You are not learning what to sing, but how to sing and I will teach you the healthiest way to sing for your voice without losing emotion and connection to the song. However my passion and knowledge really lies in contemporary pop, rock and soul.
What happens in my trial lesson?
I will chat to you about your vocal past, present and future goals. I will then take you through a discovery scale which helps me to form an assessment of your voice. Based on this assessment I then tailor some scales to develop your voice and towards the end of the lesson we then move into a song.
I explain things as we go along, as the key to good vocal use is both “muscle memory” and you improving your understanding of your voice. My focus is really to make the lessons fun and educational.
How often should I have lessons?
Initially I require new students to have lessons at least fortnightly, so you get familiar with the technique and to give us time to work through any immediate voice issues. Once you become more comfortable with the technique, it is still a good idea to check in regularly for lessons to keep yourself on track. However it is also really important to do regular short practices yourself at home between lessons, so you get maximum benefit in your lessons. The more practice you do at home, the more you’ll get from your lessons. I record every lesson so you have that to work through at home to guide your practice.
What do I need to bring to my lesson?
You can either record the lesson yourself or bring a USB and I will give you a recording. Also if you wish to work on a particular song, if you have it please bring the sheet music / chord chart or backing track with you.
How do your packs work?
Once a pack is purchased it is valid for 6 months from the date of purchase. Lessons must be booked and taken by this date. No refunds will be given. Please contact me sooner rather than later to book your lessons to ensure we can find a mutually convenient time.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes. My time is valuable and so is yours. If for whatever reason you need to cancel or change your session please give me at least 24 hours notice. In turn I will honour your time and be ready to start your session on time.
Lessons on Skype, does it work?
Yes it works surprisingly well and as these online platforms improve, the sound quality is getting better and better. Not only it is very convenient (you don’t have to leave your house), but you can also watch yourself as you sing. I personally continue to have regular voice lessons and have them over Skype with my teachers in the US. I would recommend having at least one lesson in person first if you can, just to get used to some of the exercises.
