So I know that many of you just want to sing songs and perhaps don’t see the point in exercises. After all you’re having singing lessons because you want to sing songs! Unfortunately the exercises are where we train the neuro-muscular system to respond in a particular way and strengthen the right muscles. By working on specific exercises we can be very precise with consonants and vowels used on simple melodic patterns (often up and down a scale) to find and maintain vocal balance. Jumping straight to working on songs often has difficult vowel/consonant combinations and complicated melody lines which makes it hard to stay in balance. You are also more likely to fall back into bad habits as the temptation to stylise a song will be great and this can quickly pull you off balance. It is worth being patient with the exercises as you will rewarded in the end for persevering and ultimately will have much more freedom and expression with your singing!
